Sent to the monastery of Fulda as a child. After his ordination as a deacon in 801, he spent a few years in Tours at Alcuin's school, before returning to teach at the monastery of Fulda, where he became abbot in 822. He made a major contribution to the development of the scriptorium and library. Called to the archdiocese of Mainz by Ludwig the German in 847, he held this position for 8 years, until his death on 4 February 856.
Raban was a great scholar and theologian. His numerous and abundant exegetical commentaries, based on the writings of the Fathers, were immensely popular in the Middle Ages.
