Because of his pro-iconoclasm past, it is quite complex to reconstruct a complete biography of Ignatios the deacon. He was a disciple and then collaborator of the patriarch Tarasios. He was drawn towards the iconoclasts (it is supposed in two different periods of time) and very likely thanks to this then was appointed as metropolitan of Nicaea. During his last years he became a monk on Mt. Olympos and regretted siding with the iconoclasts. As for his literary work, he is considered the most relevant representative of the early ninth-century hagiography in high style.
