Biographie

Farhad (Aphraates), known as the Persian Sage, was born into a pagan family under the Sassanid Empire. Converted to Christianity, he adopted the name of James (Jacob) - hence the confusion that sometimes arises between him and James of Nisibia. He opposed the repression of Emperor Valens. An ascetic, he may have been a bishop in the first half of the fourth century. He wrote 23 treatises, letters and homilies in Syriac.
