Renaldus

Biography

A Cistercian monk who entered Clairvaux in 1117, he was sent by Bernard in 1121 as abbot of Foigny, the third daughter-house of Clairvaux which had just been founded in the forest of Thiérache, in the diocese of Laon. Bernard wrote him three letters (Ep 72-74) while he was abbot. Raynaud took part in the Council of Arras in 1128. In 1131, Raynaud left Foigny and returned to Clairvaux. Bernard took him on as his secretary until 1141 or 1142, when he was replaced by Geoffroy. He was still alive in 1155. He is probably the author of fragments intended for the writing of the Life of Saint Bernard.
