Guigo I

Guigo I Carthusiae maioris prior generalis

Biography

Guigo the First, the Carthusian, the fifth prior of the Grande-Chartreuse, is considered the legislator of the Carthusian monks.

Guigo was born in 1083 in Saint-Romain-de-Mordane, in the diocese of Valence. In 1106, he entered the hermitage of Chartreuse, founded by Saint Bruno. Three years later, at the age of 26, he was called by his colleagues to become their prior and remained so for 27 years until his death on 27 July 1136. Under his priorship, seven new houses were founded. He was a friend of Bernard of Clairvaux and Peter the Venerable, Abbot of Cluny.

Guigo is the editor of the first written rule of the Carthusian monks, the Customs of Chartreuse, and the author of a collection of thoughts, The Meditations and a biography of Saint Hugh of Grenoble.
