Metrophanes was metropolitan of Smyrna (857-880) and reference point of the whole Ignatian party. His prominence began on the occasion of the synod of 859. Later on, as a supporter of patriarch Ignatius, Metrophanes was exiled to Cherson in 860. After being restored (869/870), he refused to recognize Photius as a patriarch in 879/880 and was thus deposed from his see and replaced by Niketas as a metropolitan of Smyrna. The date of death is uncertain.
