Marcel of Carthage

Marcellus Memorialis

Biography

Marcellus was an archivist in Roman Africa at the beginning of the 4th century. He is best known for transcribing the proceedings of the 411 Conference of Carthage, which pitted the Catholic Church against the Donatist Church. He was entrusted with this mission by the tribune Marcellinus, who himself had been entrusted by the Emperor Honorius with the administrative supervision of the conference. In the preface to these proceedings, he announces that he has done his best to abbreviate and carefully summarise everything that was said by the two opponents.
