Methodios was Constantinopolitan patriarch (843-847). As a supporter of iconophiles, around 821 he was condemned to exile by the Iconoclast government, as well as he then played a major role in the restoration of icons in 843. Afterwards, he had to deal with the hostility of some extremist groups (above all, the Stoudites) who claimed to severe punishments on former iconoclasts.
